Death Valley National Park is a beautiful park with unique geology. It is one of the largest national parks in the United States. To see this massive park, you’ll have to do some work, whether it’s hiking or off-roading to some of the more remote locations. That being said, visitors can still access many gorgeous spots in Death Valley Nation Park through some easy hikes. In this blog, we’ll go over some easy hikes in Death Valley National Park that highlight some of the features of the park. They are listed in random order.
0.4 mi (0.6km) Loop | 50 ft | 30 minutes
The Harmon Borax Works Interpretive trail is a short, paved loop that takes visitors back in time. The main attraction of this trail is the historic borax processing plant. There are interpretive panels along the way, where you’ll learn about the stories of the Death Valley borax and the 20-Mule teams. Although it is a very short walk, it is full of history and facts about this area. It’s worth a visit.
0.5 mi (0.8km) | Flat | 30 minutes (trail closed at the moment due to flooding)
This trail is a 0.5-mile walk on an ADA-accessible wooden boardwalk loop. It is one of the easy hikes in Death Valley. The boardwalk is elevated above one of the few water sources in the park. Even so, the water only flows down to the boardwalk from November through May. This is also where you get to see the pupfish, a unique species of fish that can withstand harsh conditions that would kill other fish such as water that is 4 times more saline than the ocean, hot water up to 116 °F (47 °C), and cold water down to 32 °F (0 °C). The best time to visit this easy trail in Death Valley is between February and April when the pupfish are in spawn.
1 mile (1.6km) out and back trip to the edge of salt flat. 5 miles (8km) each way to the other side | Flat
Badwater Salt Flat is a must-visit location in Death Valley National Park. This spot is a photographer’s dream come true with its famous salt crust. This year, the whole area was filled with water, creating a one-in-a-thousand-year sight: Lake Manly. It was quite beautiful. The hike out to the edge of the salt flat from the parking lot is about 0.5 miles. If you want a more substantial hike, you can hike to the other side of the salt flat. It is about 5 miles each way to the other side. We usually just went a way out to the Salt Flat so we could get some awesome sunset photos with the salt crust.
1 mi (1.6km) – 1.4 miles | 86 ft (26m) | 45 minutes round trip
Natural Bridge is one of the fun and easy hikes in Death Valley National Park. You can make it as easy or more challenging as you like. This little trail weaves through a slot canyon before reaching an impressive natural bridge, in about 0.4 miles each way. If you want something more challenging, keep going straight past the bridge and test your skills by either climbing past the dry fall to continue through the slot canyon, other climbing up the left side, along the hillside.
2 mi (3.2km) | 185ft | 1.5 hours round trip
Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is another one of the easy hikes in Death Valley National Park where you can make your own adventure. There aren’t any official trails, however, the summit of the highest dune is about 1 mile each way. You can go as far as you want. Hiking on the sand can be very tiring so even if it’s only 1 mile, it can feel like a lot. This trail is especially beautiful during the sunset or sunrise. You’ll see tons of photographers out here during this time so capture to beautiful edges of the dunes, created by the contrast of shadow and light.
If you’re looking for longer, more interesting hikes, we recommend hiking the Golden Canyon through Zabriskie Point and Gower Gulch. That hike is awesome!
